Our Vision

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced schools everywhere to close. Children have been at home for many months now, and are at risk of losing out on critical learning milestones particularly in the early years, when foundational literacy skills are being built. Our goal for this campaign is to raise funds for 5,622 libraries in every Gram Panchayat across the state of Karnataka, together with the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department and Pratham Books. We hope to raise funds to get a book in every child’s hand, to help cultivate reading as a habit and to build a Reading India.

As schools continue to remain closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, young children are at risk of losing out on critical learning milestones. In Karnataka, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj is setting up Gram Panchayat libraries across the state, where every child from 6 to 18 years of age in each Gram Panchayat will be enrolled. The libraries will have a children’s section with age-appropriate storybooks in Kannada and other languages provided by Pratham Books, a non-profit children’s book publisher that aims to get ‘a book in every child’s hand’.

This innovative programme will create informal learning spaces for children using community halls, anganwadi centres, schools and arallikattes. Each centre will have a monthly timetable for children to visit the libraries in small groups, where a librarian will be available to help the children engage with the storybooks. This ambitious project aims to bridge the learning gap by curating age-appropriate storybooks and reading materials, and through read-alouds and interactive sessions to cultivate a reading habit among children from an early age.

Each library will have 100 storybooks in Kannada, Hindi and English from Pratham Books, covering a diverse range of themes. Join us in building a Reading India, as we celebrate Children’s Day with the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department, Government of Karnataka and Pratham Books!
